| Needs Statement |
Urologists need a thorough knowledge of the most recent developments and techniques in urology to ensure the highest standards of patient care and safety. The results of the 2005 and 2006 AUA Annual Meeting attendee surveys revealed that a revolution is occurring in medicine with the rapidly expanding use of minimally invasive surgical techniques, including laparoscopy and robotics. These new technologies offer the potential promise of less morbid operative courses with lessened recovery times. As with any revolution, however, there are problems that need to be addressed and overcome. One of these is the issue of training of both residents and practicing urologists in these areas. The 2007 Section meeting will feature a total of 9 papers, a one-hour presentation, and a half hour lecture to discuss educational initiatives that address this problem.
Another area of urology that is exploding is the area of female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. With the aging population, the number of women that will develop bothersome urinary incontinence and other pelvic issues (e.g. vaginal prolapse) is increasing dramatically. Several of the problems associated with female pelvic disease will be addressed at the 2007 meeting, including overactive bladder, urodynamic studies and an update on surgery for female incontinence and vaginal reconstruction.
Prostate cancer remains one of the most common cancers in men. Active urologist members of AUA continue to report prostate cancer as the number one area of interest. Our knowledge of this disease is growing rapidly, including improved understanding of the initiating factors, the usefulness of screening, ways to determine those cancers that pose a significant threat to the patient, and ways to potentially prevent the development of clinical prostate cancer and advanced stage disease. The 2007 plenary sessions will include 16 related papers and two guest lectures on topics relating to bone health of prostate cancer patients, genetics of urologic cancers, chemotherapy, and prostate cancer expectant management.
This meeting will also feature additional podium sessions including presentations on impotence/infertility, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)/neurology, and erectile dysfunction. The meeting offers a maximum of 6.5 AMA PRA Category 1 creditsTM.
Overall, the State-of-the-Art lectures, podium and poster sessions presented by many of AUA's experts promise to deliver excellent educational value in the expanding world of urology. New at this year's meeting is a half-day AUA Coding Course to update attendees on medicare changes, new ICD-9 and CPT Codes and evaluation and management services. |
