Welcome
Welcome to this SMR symposium entitled ‘Challenges Facing Drug Discovery in Vascular Disease’.
There are many challenges facing drug discovery in vascular disease. These include improving our understanding of the underlying disease processes, application of our knowledge of the disease to identify new targets for therapeutic intervention and improving methods to monitor risk and progression of the disease in patients. The task is made more difficult by the diversity of the diseases affecting the vasculature, whose initiation and clinical outcomes are strongly influenced by genetic, metabolic and environmental risk factors. Today ’s meeting will consider the challenges facing drug discovery in the underlying disease process of atherosclerosis and one of its clinical manifestations, stroke. The topics of the meeting will include consideration of new opportunities in the prevention and treatment of vascular disease and the potential of new drug discovery programmes in fields of nuclear receptors, lipases and proteases. The meeting will also cover the potential role and value of imaging and surrogate markers to follow disease progression and challenges facing pre-clinical and clinical drug discovery in stroke.
We are honoured to have an international line up of experts to the meeting and thank them all sincerely for taking part.
The organisers would also like to extend their thanks to Organon Research and Scottish Enterprise for providing the venue and funding for the meeting.
We hope that you enjoy the programme.
